Working Safely in your NuAire Biological Safety Cabinet | NuAire

Laboratory equipment manufacturer NuAire releases a new “Working Safely in your NuAire Biological Safety Cabinet” online presentation and DVD. The presentation consists of 7 Chapters, 8 videos in all to teach technicians, researchers, scientists, certifiers, and more the basic concepts of biological safety cabinets. Understand a biological safety cabinet works and operations. Learn the proper steps to take before you being your research. Acquire basic work skills while within the work zone to minimize air disruptions. Find the latest ergonomic advancements in biosafety cabinet design. Know what to do after you have completed your research. Acquire the basic knowledge on biological safety cabinet certification based on NSF/ASNI standard 49.

Chapter 1: Introduction

Learn the basics of how NuAire Biological Safety Cabinets are designed to offer optimal personnel, environmental and product protection.

Chapter 2: Understanding the Biosafety Cabinet

Biological Safety Cabinets were designed to remove or minimize exposures to hazardous biological materials and hazardous particulates. It is the principal device used to provide containment of infectious splashes or aerosols generated by microbiological procedures.

Chapter 3: Proper Preparation

Learn steps to take before you begin work in your Biological Safety Cabinet. A proper biosafety or operations manuals will specify practices and procedures designed to minimize and eliminate risks.

Chapter 4: Using Proper Procedures and Techniques

The use of proper procedures and equipment cannot be overemphasized in providing primary personnel and environmental protection. The Biological Safety Cabinet is not a substitute for good laboratory practice and proper aseptic technique.

Chapter 5: Working in your Biosafety Cabinet

Proper technique when working within the biological safety cabinet will minimize air turbulence and prevent splatter or unwanted spread of aerosols.

Chapter 5a: Experience Ergonomics

An important part of a safe work environment is making sure it is ergonomically designed to work with you, not against you. When you work in a NuAire Biosafety Cabinet, you’ll experience a comfortable, ergonomically designed workspace.

Chapter 6: When Work is Completed

After work has been completed proper protocols must be followed to decontaminate the biosafety cabinet to avoid potential contamination risks.

Chapter 7: Maintenance & Certification

Proper preventative maintenance, yearly maintenance, and certification are needed to maximize your products life as well as keep up to date with industry standards to eliminate safety hazards.

White Paper – Impact of Class II Biological Safety Cabinet Downflow Velocity on Cross Contamination

Down flow in a Class II, Type A2 Biological Safety Cabinet

Smoke flow demonstrating the air movement of down flow air and the work surface air split in a Class II, Type A2 Biological Safety Cabinet.

Background: Over the last several years, Biological Safety Cabinet (BSC) manufacturers have lowered downflow velocity while maintaining inflow velocity in an effort to increase energy efficiency, reduce exhaust system requirements and lower BSC Noise and vibration levels. However, the lowering of downflow velocity may come with a consequence of greater lateral airflow movement within the workzone creating greater potential for cross contamination. The lowering of the downflow velocity does not compromise personnel and product containment performance. Why? Primarily, by maintaining inflow velocity above a certain level as required by the standard, typically 100 fpm (0.51 mps). However, the standard does not require a specific downflow velocity and can be adjusted as needed based on the design parameters of the workzone supply diffuser and grill patterns (airflow distribution) to assure compliance to the personnel and product protection requirements of NSF/ANSI 49. NSF/ANSI 49 test procedures do test for cross contamination, but only at the workzone sidewalls, which doesn’t necessarily translate into the lateral movement of airflow in the center of the workzone. The result of these lower downflow velocities may be a greater level of sample cross contamination using traditional work practice guidelines.
